https://Hosted331.renlearn.com/16832/HomeConnect

All students in first, second, third, and fourth grades will participate in the Accelerated Reader program. The program involves reading books and then taking  a computerized test for comprehension. Points are then cashed in for prizes during the school year in the Reading Room.

Accelerated reader books are available in the Reading Room and at the Ventnor Public Library. Accelerated Reader tests can only be taken at the VECC. We now have every available Accelerated Reader test.

Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books

Dear Parents/Guardians,

In the Reading Room Library, third and fourth graders have started a motivational reading program (contest) called Battle of the Books. This state-wide program has been conducted by school librarians in New Jersey since 1986, and has proven itself to be a fun and effective way to promote reading.

The students have been placed in groups with an average of five students. Each group is responsible for reading the same ten books. Each student is responsible for reading four books, so that each book will be read by two different group members. Students are then encouraged to read all ten books.

Homeroom “battles” will take place at the end of May.

One group will win from each homeroom. These groups will then compete against each other in the auditorium. The third and fourth grade championships will take place on Monday, June 3rd.

The children will prepare for their battles by reading, discussing their books, filling out “memory jogger forms,” participating in mock battles, taking Accelerated Reader tests, etc. The questions are all phrased in the same way: In what book …?  The answer is always given as the title and author of the book. Each group has a captain, who monitors the group’s reading progress, and a spokesperson, who will give the answer for the group.

The three top teams in each grade will receive bookstore gift certificates. Group members of the first place team will each get a $15 gift certificate, second place $10 gift certificates, and third place $5 gift certificates.

The second contest is for the third and fourth grade homerooms that read the most books and complete the most number of book reports. They will be rewarded with a pizza party. In addition, students who read all 10 books will get to spend an extra 10 points at the AR store.

Thank you in advance for your support of this beneficial program.
